I explore the remarkable repetition of natural forms across scales, where the tiny mirrors the massive. A dried leaf can evoke the sweep of a rolling landscape, while a single upright leaf shifts in scale to become a monumental cliff.

I use the shield as a metaphor for protection. Some works reference the scale, shape, and central boss of Viking shields, while others become more abstract. Drawing on imagery of natural materials in different stages of growth and decay, these works explore the tension between our desire for security and the impermanence of the natural world. Protection, like nature itself, is never fixed or absolute. It is constantly changing, adapting, and ultimately transient.

I look closely at the twisting, drying forms of fallen leaves and twigs, discovering hidden movement within them as they decay. Dry, static forms become living, breathing creatures.

Here you will find paintings that are 12” x 12” in size or smaller. The imagery of these paintings are a mixture of themes from all my categories of larger work but there is an immediacy and simplicity to these smaller pieces.

While walking past an old barn in Denmark, I noticed a broken window that had been replaced with woven twigs and hay. This quiet encounter with an unexpected arrangement of natural materials became the inspiration for these two paintings.

The natural cycle of growth and decay, and the transformation that leaves and other debris undergo, mirrors the aging of skin. I see beauty and individuality in this process, where the marks of time become evidence of a life lived and shaped by experience rather than signs of decline.
